As an entrepreneur, you’ll be bombarded by so many talks about leadership; you’ll always find people all over the place who claim to be leaders, and have a lot to say about leadership. While some of these come in form of advice and tips to become a great leader, you should be wary of what you take in. Too many leaders hold a few damaging core beliefs that simply aren’t true. Be able to sieve what you need to follow, and simply shut out all others.

Myth 1:

Leaders are born, not made.


Leadership is a skill that can be learned.

Anyone can excel at anything if they truly put their mind to it. Anyone can become as good as world leaders leaders by simply working towards it. True leaders have a vision. They align their goals and choices around that vision, and stay committed to making their vision a reality.


Myth 2:

You need to be in authority to be a leader.


Leadership is more than a job title; it’s a way of life.

Many people confuse the position of a leader with that of authority. But that’s never the case. There are uncountable number of cases where people were placed in leadership positions, but they did more to demoralize and destroy the business than anything else.

Leadership is simply a way of life. There is no leadership switch that you turn on when you get into the office in the morning and turn off when you get home at night. It is based on action, performance, ability, and effectiveness. So, to become a true leader, you need to live and breathe leadership 24/7, 365 days a year.


Myth 3:

Leaders have all the answers.


The best leaders have a clear understanding of their own limitations.

True leadership involves being able able to listen and learn from others. The best leaders know that success is a team sport and there is no such thing as a “self-made” man. They realize that it takes a diverse team to truly innovate.

They search for passionate people in diverse areas of expertise and bring them together. Great leaders listen more than they speak. They listen with the goal to understand, not the goal to answer. They hire amazing teams and solicit regular input from team members. To be a great leader, there must be a will to empower others, while also tapping from their wealth of knowledge.


Myth 4: 

Failure is not an option in leadership


It is only by failing repeatedly that we can learn, evolve and grow.

This is such a deadly myth that has attempts to turn leaders into super-humans. It is important to know that failure is an essential part of exploration, new discovery, and innovation. Many leaders carry the thought that they cannot afford to fail, so they stay with proven approaches from the past. Their actions lack curiosity and exploration because they are so afraid of failure that they aren’t willing to try something new.

To a be a true leader, it is important for to embrace and celebrate failure as an important aspect of development and discovery.
