Being productive and achieving success in life can come by just the simple things we do everyday. One of which, is being an early riser and beginning the day early. Waking up early and going to work is understandably the norm for busy professionals in Lagos. We understand why you need to hurry out of the the house at 5am to catch either your staff bus or Danfo buses just to beat traffic.
But to be more productive, and in the long run, successful, here are a few things you must do daily before you step out of the house in the morning and before your clock hits 8am:
1. Eat a healthy breakfast
In the city we live in, it’s difficult to have breakfast before stepping out. But, did you know eating anything at all for breakfast puts you ahead of a lot of people? We all know that rush-out-the-door-with-an-empty-stomach feeling. Take that extra time in the morning to fuel your body for the tasks ahead. And if you need to get it ready the night before, do that!
When you eat a healthy breakfast, the doors to a productive day swing wide open. It will help keep your mind on what’s at hand and not your growling stomach, as it provides energy, improves your short-term memory, and helps you to concentrate more intensely and for longer periods.
2. Map out your day
Maximize your potential by mapping out your schedule for the day, as well as your goals and to do’s. Mornings are the best time for this, as it is often one of the only quiet times a person gets throughout the day. The early hours foster easier reflection that helps when prioritizing your activities. They also allow for uninterrupted problem-solving when trying to fit everything into your timetable.
While scheduling, don’t forget about your mental health. Plan a 10 minute break after that stressful meeting for a quick walk around the block or a moment of meditation at your desk. Trying to eat healthy? Schedule a small window in the evening to pack a few nutritious foods to bring to work the next day.
3. Listen to or read uplifting content
Ordinary people seek entertainment. Extraordinary people seek education and learning. It is common for the world’s most successful people to read at least one book per week. They are constantly learning.
Taking even 15 to 30 minutes every morning to read uplifting and instructive information changes you. It puts you in the zone to perform at your highest.
4. Review your goals
Your short and long term goals should be written down . Taking just a few minutes to read your life goals puts your day into perspective. If you read your long-term goals every day, you will think about them every day. If you think about them every day, and spend your days working toward them, they’ll manifest.
Achieving goals is a science. There’s no confusion or ambiguity to it. If you follow a simple pattern, you can accomplish all of your goals, no matter how big they are. A fundamental aspect of that is writing them down and reviewing them every single day.
Most people that work out daily, work out in the morning. Whether it’s a simple exercise session or a trip to the gym, exercising before work gives you a boost of energy for the day and that deserved sense of accomplishment.
Even if the thought of a 5 am jog doesn’t sit well with you, try waking up 15 minutes early for a quick bedside set of push-ups or stretching. It’ll help wake up your body, and prep you for your day.
Which of these would you be including in your morning routine?
