The grant was launched around June 2016 by GSM Association also known as GSMA. It is the trade body that represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide. Approximately 800 mobile operators are full GSMA members and a further 300 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem are associate members.
The GSMA Ecosystem Accelerator Innovation Fund provides selected start-ups in Africa and Asia with grant funding, technical assistance, and the opportunity to partner with mobile operators in their markets to help scale their products and services into sustainable businesses with positive socio-economic impact.

Grants provided by GSMA Ecosystem Accelerator are often within the range of £100,000 to £250,000. To be eligible, startups must be able to match 50% of these funds requested with third-party funding, assets, or sweat-equity.
