The Nigerian wedding industry is really big.
The country’s extravagant celebration culture often sees up to 1,000 people coming together to toast to the happy couple at a lavish party whose every detail has been meticulously planned months in advance. So, if inviting a couple of hundred of your nearest and dearest to your wedding sounds like a big gathering, then you a probably not getting married in Nigeria.
Because of the many opportunities that abound, Nigerian entrepreneurs have begun to tap in the booming industry, providing services especially tailored to the needs of the country’s large-scale marriage celebrations.
From making wedding dresses, to being a wedding photographer, baking cakes and cooking wedding cuisines, organising wedding events, providing drinks and publishing wedding magazines, there are tons of things you can begin and break into the industry.
1. Find your interest
You shouldn’t be going into the wedding industry because it’s booming, and everyone seems to be succeeding there. You should have a passion and interest. Do love photography? do you have interest in fashion designing? Are you yearning for a career in event management?
When you find your interest, you’ll be able to refine and adjust it to work for the wedding industry. No one goes into the wedding industry and prides all the services needed for a wedding, everyone in the industry has a niche. That’s how it works, and that’s the only way you can succeed in it.
2. Get some experience
This is very important, especially if you’re a newbie. You really can’t just go in when you have no idea of what the wedding industry looks like.
For example if you are an upcoming photographer looking to go pro, why not inquire with a couple of photographers if you could go with them on a few wedding shoot. Not only will this help build up your portfolio but you will pick up some great hints and tips from the pros that you might not have learnt anywhere else, not forgetting to mention making some super valuable connections.
3. Create a website
Personally I think wedding space is hugely driven by vision. For example, most couples wouldn’t book a venue without seeing it first, they wouldn’t book a photographer without seeing a portfolio and they wouldn’t book a band without seeing them in action.
First impressions are crucial and in a time when everything is so easily accessible, it is important to have a good quality website up and running for when you launch. You want clients to be able to find you as quick as possible, you want to catch their eye, draw them in and make them want to know more about you. Instagram can also come in handy here. Use it to show off some of your best work.
4. Know your market
Knowing your market is one great way to succeed in the industry. Ensure you do your research. The industry is big, and for a country like Nigeria, with so many players, the market will most definitely be priced differently.
Pricing your market is important because being overpriced could be overlooked by some and being under-priced could be seen as not having experience. Not only knowing your market in price, but also knowing who your potential clientele is always very important. Be creative and savvy in the ways you reach out to your clients.
