To attain global standard, the new President and Chairman in Council of the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria, CPN, Prof. Charles Uwadia while outlining his two years eight point agenda has disclosed that IT curriculum in many universities is undergoing review. Uwadia , in an exclusive interview Sun Tech news said that this was occasioned by accreditation visitations by both Nigerian University Commission, NUC, and CPN.
According to him, from a professional point of view, Nigerian institutions of learning are expected to be guided by the Information Technology Standards for all levels of education and professionals in Nigeria, noting that by Act 49 of 1993, CPN is empowered to control and supervise the Computing/IT profession in Nigeria.
He further revealed that, IT Education curriculum is expected to be reviewed as regularly as the body of knowledge and technology change, and part of this mandate, according to Uwadia is to determine the standard of knowledge and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the profession and improving those standards from time to time.
“CPN intends to play this role as regards the standards and quality of the curriculum of the proposed ICT University through accreditation”, he added.
CPN’s Mandatory Continuing Professional Development programme, MCPD, according to the one time President of the Nigerian Computer Society, is to ensure that members refresh there knowledge and keep abreast of developments in a dynamic profession.
Outlining his strategic focus, he told IT professionals in his manifesto that through partnership, CPN under his tenure could develop and grow IT Nigeria into meaningful and abundant wealth ecosystem.
To scale up academic lectures for challenges ahead in the 21st century knowledge society, he said that CPN under his watch would organise nationwide IT capacity building roundtable for computer science lectures. Also, apart from introducing CPN E-learning program, online examination certification process, and innovative delivery of IT tutorial online, he assured of engaging local content implementation and monitoring at the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, executive levels.
