The Health Risks Of Staring At Your Screen For Too Long

An average working Nigerian stares at a computer for at least eight hours a day. Like most people out there would admit, they suffer from computer vision syndrome. Long story short, it means all that screen time is leading to eye strain—which then, inevitably, leads to things like headaches, dry eyes, and neck pain. Sound familiar?

Imagine adding to that uncomfortable office chair, cell phone screen, and the TV screen. It makes sense why some people always end up cranky after every work day.

Here’s how too much screen time can take a toll on your health:



People who spend the most time in front of a screen may have the biggest increase in body fat over time. When you stare at the phone, TV or computer for too long, you use up time that could have been spent on something active. That may not help your waistline, either.



If you’re still commenting on the latest social media scandal after lights out, you’re probably robbing yourself of even more of the 8 to 10 hours of sleep you need. It’s tough enough having to work 8 hours daily and still beat the traffic home. So, hitting the sack for the needed rest is the probably the reasonable thing to do.



Sure, it’s almost impossible to avoid the screens. But too much screen time can make you more aggressive and less sympathetic toward other people. Oh yes, that’s true. Social media posts on your screens can also send unrealistic messages about what you should look like or what you should own in order to feel good about yourself.

But good news! There’s a ton of small things you and I can do today that’ll seriously change your life.

Here are 10 tips you can try right now:

  1. Turn your screen brightness down to around the same brightness as the room you are in. This not only saves battery life but also limits your exposure to excessive light.
  2. Cut back to watching your top two or three favorite shows each week.
  3. Turn off your phone 30 minutes before you go to bed.
  4. Remember to blink. We are sometimes so focused that we let our eyes dry up in concentration, and studies show that computer users tend to blink less.
  5. If your eyes are still dry, consider using eye drops throughout the day to rejuvenate your vision.
  6. Zoom in and enlarge your text. Small words tend to make you squint and hunch forward, both of which are bad for you.
  7. Position your computer at arms length. This will prevent visual strain and neck as well as back pain.
  8. Try an anti-glare screen on your monitor.
  9. Or, if possible, avoid working near a window that causes a glare.
  10. And, if you’re looking between a document and a screen, set up the paper at the height of the screen.
