How To Find Your Own Style

At the risk of sounding cliche, finding your personal style is a journey. There are those who manage to find their style early on and those who find it much later in life. But fashion becomes redundant when you are just following what is on trend and dressing up just like everyone else.

If you consistently shape your style according to how others style themselves, you would conform and in essence, you would become invisible.

Here are a few tips to help you find and develop your own style:

1. Define your values

Finding your personal style is somewhat similar to finding yourself. What values define you?  How would you describe your personality? Does your style reflect your values as a person? Your style should define who you are as a person. There are no rules to it, so it’s okay to create your own rules and bend a few conventional ones.

You know what you like, and what you look good in. Remember to always keep that in mind — your guts won’t deceive you normally.

2. Know your body type

One of the first things to consider is your body type and what works for you. Have a good understanding of your body shape, your selling points and flaws. That way, you can create your own style with the right clothes and accessories to either accentuate or camouflage your body.

Once you have discovered that, you can start thinking about the desired silhouette you want to create for a balanced outlook.

3. Know the colours that inspire you

Colours can also have a huge effect on your style and how you feel. Understand how certain colours make you feel. You may start by experimenting with bits of colours through accessories and see how these make you feel.

Maybe it’s time you also went past the black, brown, and white colours. Go vibrant from time to time.

4. Keep a scrapbook of styles  you like

To find your own style, you need role models. Find what makes them appealing to you. There is no need to copy them, but you can emulate them. You can cut out and paste magazine pictures of people with styles you admire, save their pictures on your phone,  or simply pin them on .

Give room for your style to  evolve by following how others with similar personal style dress. After a while, you will see a pattern developing of the kind of styles that reflect you. Take note of them when building your own style.

5. Be critical of your current wardrobe

Be honest. Which clothes in your closet do you really really like? How many have you not worn in recent times? How many reflect the kind of personal style you intend creating?  How about discarding or donating clothing items that you are sure don’t really work for you?

They may be great pieces, but if they don’t suit the personal style you are after, then there’s really no point in keeping them. This means taking control of your appearance, both in clothing and personal care.

6. Follow the latest trends only if they fit your style

Learn through fashion blogs and books, like how to wear a black dress, the right shirt/pant length, sock choice (when in doubt wear black), proper tie length/knots, right shoes and so on.  Also, if  a celebrity wears your kind of style, you can try it out for yourself.

But never forget, true style defies fashion trends. Although, it is nice to add some trendy pieces to your wardrobe, you should only go for trends that suit what you want.

7. Get the basics for the style you want to create

Do you have the basic essentials necessary for your particular style? For example, accessories are easier to get and you can be creative with them. Also invest in a good pair of shoes and choose the perfect hand bag for your style.

Try to be creative by combining both high and low end brands. Definitely, get things you can afford, but buy quality instead of so many mediocre ones.

8. Never be sorry!

Take constructive criticism and advice, specially from people you think know a thing or two about fashion. But, never go against what you feel comfortable with. If a particular dress takes away from this, then don’t wear it.

Style is about comfort in your own clothes, and confidence in yourself. If someone makes a negative remark about how you look, don’t ever be discouraged by it.

In summary, personal style is only a part of what you wear. The major part is your confidence in wearing what you like.
