This is Nigeria –working and doing just what is expected of you at the office might earn you a monthly salary, but may not get you a substantial raise or promotion. Fulfilling your job responsibilities is good but there are many people in your workplace doing the same thing.
We’ve found you eight proven ways to climb the career ladder quickly.
1. Get a job with few peers
Sounds corny, right? Well, it’s smart thinking to find a job with few competition for the job role. For instance, you may work in an Audit Firm that requires 5 Internal Auditors versus one that needs 30 Auditors. When it comes to the annual appraisal, you are up against 4 versus 29. Just think about it –which situation would be more favourable?
2. Find new openings
Having worked, for say, one to three years in your current company, find a new job with an opening for the next level. For instance, if you are an Assistant Accountant, find another company with an opening for an Accountant. If you were to wait at your current company, it would take a longer period. Someone has to move up or the management would need to approve of the new designation before you or any lower rank employee can be promoted.
3. Work with Startups
One very good way to move up your career ladder fast is to work with companies that are just starting up. This way, you become a part of the pioneer batch of staff. Chances are, as the company grows and expands, you grow too. A word of caution for this strategy, though –the flip side is that because it is a budding company, the chances of it folding up are high too.
4. Be a guru at your job
Get good at your day-to-day office skills. It is important that you develop your skills by taking opportunities, supporting and assisting your manager/team members. With your contributions, you would be positioning yourself as a niche expert in the organisation. Learn the neat tricks and use them as often as possible for your everyday work. This can do wonders to your career!
5. Create rapport with the right people
This may sound a bit like kissing ass but not really. Be conscious of how you present yourself to others, especially those who hold the aces to your promotion. Be friendly, smile and be approachable. Of course, do not be fake but people can easily recognise bad vibes, and they usually stick with them for a long while. Your emotional intelligence and amiability on the job will take you far up the career ladder.
6. Become a master opportunity seeker
Keep taking advantage of opportunities as they come. This may be opportunities to do more training, go on a short course, or be mentor. Remember, all of these contribute to your personal development, curriculum vitae, and work experience. The better you are at taking opportunities, the more chances you have of positioning yourself towards getting a promotion.
7. Take the initiative
Do not wait for your manager or boss before completing or tackling a task. Sometimes, a proposal or approval is not necessary and you just need to go head first! Time waits for no one, and it will soon be someone else to crack the ideas you had hoped to realise. Take action and who knows, you may get recognised for it with a promotion!
8. Stay away from the water cooler
Companies look to promoting dedicated staff, not members of the gossip pool. Be friendly, but limit your personal interactions while at work. The point here is that a company would need to know that when promoted, you will align with the management team and not be one of the gang who is influenced by his or her water cooler “friends”.
If all else fails and you can’t seem to get promoted within your current company, don’t be afraid to go outside.
