Want to improve your style but you don’t know where to start?
This article is for the Naija guys and lady who want to improve their style dramatically with little effort.
More and more people are starting to realize how a sense of fashion is an asset in every aspect of their lives. In today’s world, looking your best keeps you one step ahead.
Here are to ways to improve your sense of style:
Become an expert observer
The number one thing you can do to improve your sense of style and train your eye is this: look at how other people are doing it! What types of pieces are they wearing, what colours do they mix, what shoes do they pair with their outfits, how do they accessorize and so on.
Use Pinterest, Instagram and fashion blogs to supplement your real-life studies and expose yourself to a broader range of styles.
Count your compliments
You’ve probably received compliments on your dressing severally. Do you know these compliments can actually be used to assess your sense of style, and help you make informed decisions?
Pay attention to which pieces your peers compliment you on. Not only will your self-esteem get a boost, but it can also help inform which styles look best on you. Sometimes it’s hard to be objective when you look in the mirror at your own outfits, so noting which clothes get compliments is a way to get an outside opinion.
For a complete beginner, imitating others can be a super helpful creative technique, because it gives you a concrete blueprint that you can use as a starting point. Imitate! Pick one outfit and copy it. Then assess what you like/don’t like about it, rinse and repeat.
Find an outfit on Pinterest or on a fashion blog that you could imagine wearing. Then, use your own clothes to replicate that outfit as closely as possible, or go into a store and try some outfits on.
Use your most-worn dresses as a blueprint
Examine your closet and pull out the pieces you wear the most. Even if you aren’t happy with your current wardrobe, you’re likely to have a few pieces you gravitate toward. Ask yourself why you like these pieces. Is it the cut, colour, style aesthetic, fabric? Once you become clear on what you like about your favourite pieces, you can use those as a jumping-off point for making future purchases.
Begin to experiment
If you want to change anything about your style, you’re going to have to step out of your comfort zone. You should experiment with different fashion genres and clothing styles until you strike on something that feels right.
Keep in mind that everyone with great style has gone through this through this experimentation phase at some point in their lives and could likely tell you millions of stories about all the ‘terrible’ outfits they wore before they finally settled on a style.
