As a leader or business owner, your ability to communicate effectively can make or mar your company. It would determine the productivity and effectiveness of your employees. How do you communicate new ideas to your team? How do you ensure they understand you, and are effectively acting upon your new ideas?
Here are a few tips to help communicate ideas effectively to your employees:
Be clear and concise
Overwriting and using technical jargon will lead to confusion and misunderstanding. You don’t want to get the exact opposite of the initial idea you were trying to pass across. Be clear – tell them what you have to tell them and what you want them to do. Be as brief as you can. If you’ll be writing to, or talking with them, deliver your message succinctly.
Don’t communicate an idea at the last minute when you need results immediately. This would get employees tensed and you’ll get results that are low quality, compared to what you could have received if the message had come in earlier. However, in some cases, when that is inevitable, ensure you make your employees understand and provide them with tools or resources that would make the task easier.
Don’t just talk and walk away, one-way communication is a thing of the past. Give room for feedback so that you can measure if your ideas are well-understood by your employees, and if they can work on it. While some employees might have questions, others can offer suggestions. You’ll not only be empowering them by giving room for feedback, your ability to address their feed-backs will determine how they’ll be able to build up on your ideas.
How far have they gone since you last discussed about an idea? Are there challenges? You must follow up after every meeting sessions. This would not only speed up what how fast your employees are working, you’ll be on the same page and be able to notice quickly when an issue arises or if there’s an employee that is lost on all that have been communicated.
